ISP’s to Fix DNS Typo Errors!

Fixing DNS Errors

How often have you typed wrong URL in address bar and end up on a domain page that is parked at SEDO or similar site, or entirely takes you to a place where you never intended to visit. What if ISP’s identify the error and instead of taking you to phishing / parked page, corrects the typo for you, and takes you to the site you wanted to go to in the first place!

First we need to understand what is a DNS Server.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is what allows your computer to locate the concerned Web server(s) when you type in a site’s address in your browser’s address bar. It is an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they are easier to remember. The Internet, however, works on IP addresses. Every time a domain name is used, a DNS service translates the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4. The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server does not know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and so on, until it locates the correct IP address.

When a resolving/recursive DNS server doesn’t know the IP address for a given domain, it asks other DNS servers for help. The ultimate authority for translating a particular domain name into an IP address lies with the “authoritative” DNS servers for that domain. If, for example, a Web site is hosted with Pubdomains Web hosting, the hosting company, ie Pubdomains.com in this case is responsible for running the authoritative DNS servers for all the sites they host.

Problem With Typos

What do you expect to see when you type in Goole.com instead of Google.com? Well you do get a search engine for sure, however it’s not the search engine you wanted to visit. While this is superficial, the bigger problem comes with email addresses. If I set up email address with a typo domain, who knows your confidential information may land up with me because of a typo error by someone else. I don’t need to host a domain to receive emails right!

Setting it Right

If you think all this is too dangerous and really harming your legitimate business, help is round the corner. There are companies working on DNS Server models where typo errors would be detected and a suggestion made to you instead of directly taking you to a site which could be used for scam or phishing. This would give you time to rectify your error and prevent you from visiting wrong site!
