After successfully installing phpLinkDirectory and later making Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URL’s to work on Pubdomains (GoDaddy Reseller) Servers as I mentioned in an earlier post, I was ready to test if Joomla SEF URL’s work.
To make sure that server would be ready to accept my changes in .htaccess file, I created a blank .htaccess file in the installed root folder and allowed caching to take place in an hour — in fact I waited for a little longer as I was caught up in other work. Once I thought server was ready to accept changes in .htaccess file, first thing was to test if .htaccess was working at all. This was achieved by same trick as mentioned earlier to do a simple redirect by using following three lines of code in .htaccess
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^(.*).html$ http://www.ownhost.in
RewriteEngine On –> to enable URL rewrite
RewriteBase / –> To indicate that folder containing .htaccess and sub-folders to be accessed
RewriteRule –> Define the rule to redirect http://myhost.com/anyname.html to http://www.ownhost.in
On my first attempt after modifying .htaccess and saving it with code above, it worked and I was able to redirect.
Mission Accomplished: .htaccess is ready to work for you now. Any change in .htaccess from here on would be instantaneous!!
Next stage was to rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess, so first deleted .htaccess I was using for test redirect before I renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess
, logged in to admin panel >> Global Configuration and modified SEO / Mod_Rewrite settings
That is all I had to do to make Joomla SEF URL to work (default one, since I have not installed any Mod for SEF URL’s)

If you have faced an issue with enabling SEF URL’s for your Joomla installation, I would suggest to go in a linear and logical manner to identify the cause. First ensure .htaccess is cached and ready to work for you, second check each section (rather than enabling entire .htaccess entries) to review each section if it is working for you.

The htaccess file configuration you mentioned above works for multiple domains in the same godaddy hosting account?
I tried to change my htaccess as you suggested but my other domain names will change to http://www.myMainDomain.com/otherDomainName/ and it should be only http://www.OtherDomainName.com as it was before.
Please a little help. Thank You.
Hi Kim,
Not able to get your question – if you could elaborate please.
Thanks

Hi;
I tried what you said, and everything works like a charm on the main site, however, all of my other domains on the same premium account fail with 500 server error.
It is really weird, since the test process you describe works perfectly on all sites, yet when I change the htacces.txt to .htaccess and turn on the Jomla SEF and mod_rewrite it bombs out.
HELP if you have any ideas.
Arif
Thank you. Gracias
